The Thessaloniki Balkan FM Church works together with an Armenian Church that uses the same space for services. The Pastor Michalis and his wife, Liana, are true friends. Many times Michalis preaches and Liana leads worship in our Greek Church. They are "prisoners" of Greece. For ten years, they have been trying to gain legal residence in Greece. They made the dreadful mistake of declaring that they are "evangelical ministers" when they first arrived in Greece from their home church of 10,000 in Armenia. They are missionaries to the some 30,000 Armenians in Thessaloniki. They have had endless court cases about their status and are continuously denied. Therefore, they can not leave Greece.
Recently, Liana went with charming daughter, Agape, to plead for favor with crowds of others before the Governor. Out of the crowd, the Greek governor selected Liana to grant them papers in pre-Easter graces for political publicity. They came forward to explain their condition in front of everyone with the cameras flashing. Liana and Apage won the governor's heart, and he declared, "Come tomorrow to my office and your papers will be granted!" The next day at the office, Liana stood in front of his desk when the Governor opened her file with great expectation. Suddenly, the governor's eye landed on the words "Evangelical Minister", and he closed the file. Papers would not be possible. The press would ruin the Easter political ploy. Liana's hopes were dashed. Prejudice prevails. Religious injustice and jealousies continue in the world today. Now, their lawyer suggests a $4,000 bride. Of course, prayers for the many oppressed by governmental bias are needed. Also this week, several requests for permits have been denied.
Last Sunday, there were 6 first time visitors at Church! Big for a small group of 50. Sunday, April 12, is Palm Sunday and April 19 is Easter here in Greece. Kali and Irini from Church fly to Birmingham, UK to attend a youth conference at Renewal Christian Centre. On April 20, there will be a quick trip to Erseke Albania. 10 years ago, we lead several teams there to build a refugee camp for Kosovars. Now, today it is a Bible School and summer camp.
For all celebrating Easter, we pray for resurrection joy to fill your hearts and life giving power to energize your daily life!
